Butter

Butter is commonly sold in sticks (pictured 4 oz/110 g) or blocks, and frequently served with the use of a butter knife.

Butter is a dairy product made by churning fresh or fermented cream or milk. It is generally used as a spread and a condiment, as well as in cooking applications such as baking, sauce making, and frying. Butter consists of butterfat, water and milk proteins.

Most frequently made from cows' milk, butter can also be manufactured from that of other mammals, including sheep, goats, buffalo, and yaks. Salt, flavorings and preservatives are sometimes added to butter. Rendering butter produces clarified butter or ghee, which is almost entirely butterfat.

Butter is an emulsion which remains a solid when refrigerated, but softens to a spreadable consistency at room temperature, and melts to a thin liquid consistency at 32–35 °C (90–95 °F). The density of butter is 911 kg/m3 (1535.5 lb/yd3).[1]

It generally has a pale yellow color, but varies from deep yellow to nearly white. Its color is dependent on the animal's feed and is commonly manipulated with food colorings in the commercial manufacturing process, most commonly annatto or carotene.

How to Make Layered Sand Jars


Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • An empty glass jar or bottle
  • Enough white sand to fill the jar you’ve chosen
  • Note: table salt can be substituted for sand
  • Chalk, in a variety of colors
  • Gold or silver enamel paint
  • Small paintbrush
  • Table knife
  • Newspaper
  • Small bowl
  • Paper funnel
  • White glue

How to Make Layered Sand Jars

Step1
Begin by washing and thoroughly drying the jar or bottle. If possible, run it through the dishwasher so that it will be sparkling and completely dried from the warm air.
Step2
Next, paint the lid of your jar or bottle with gold or silver enamel paint. Other colors can be used, but the metallic shades make a nice finishing touch for your project.
Step3
Now that you are ready to create your sand jar, think about the colors you would like to use and possible combinations of colors.

Your sand jar will appeared striped, so you need at least two colors.
Step5
Working on a newspaper to protect your work surface, pour a small amount of sand or salt into the bowl. Then scrape the side of a piece of chalk with the knife, letting the scrapings fall into the bowl. The scrapings will be very fine, almost dust-like in their appearance. Stop often, and stir with the knife to determine if you have reached the intensity of color you want. The more chalk scrapings you add, the darker the color will become.
Step6
Make a funnel from a piece of paper by rolling it into a cone shape and taping it, leaving a small hole in the bottom through which you can pour the sand or salt.
Step7
Pour the first color into the jar, deciding whether you want thick or thin stripes. For a very small jar, you’ll need to use very thin layers; you can also make thin stripes in a larger jar, although wider ones give a bolder look.
Step8
Set the extra colored sand or salt aside (in a pile on the newspaper) while you go on with the next color.
Step9
If you are alternating colors with white, remember that you simply use plain salt or sand with no chalk scrapings added.
Step10
Continue layering the jar with various colors. Fill to the very top so that the layers won’t move around. Step11 Glue the lid onto the jar.
